- Aug 15, 2011 - New York, NY -- "Double Up," a book of photography from Jules Allen, the award-winning photographer with a keen eye for nuance, texture and rhythm,  tells the personal, photographic story of pugilistic life inside New York City’s Gleason’s Gym.  Allen trained in Gleason’s, the oldest, active boxing gym in the country,  in the 1980s.  The story and images of the book are a result of Allen’s work with the renowned boxing, master-trainer, Bobby McQuillen, who also worked with Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali and musician, Miles Davis.

Double Up provides, a view “from the inside out,” wherein each image is masterfully crafted, with separations by Thomas Palmer, bringing the doutone images to full life on the page.  The superb graphic design and layout by Marvin Hoshino, presents a body of work seldom seen in the world of art and photography.

Allen, the recipient of numerous grants and awards, has been widely exhibited in the U.S. and abroad.  His photographs are included in numerous museums, inclusive of the Museum of Modern Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian, the National Gallery, the Schomburg Center for Culture & Research and others. Mr. Allen currently lives and works in New York as a photographer and a professor in the Department of Art and Design at Queensborough Community College, of which the QCC Art Gallery serves as co-publisher of the book.
